About Ries Dialogues

I am a wife and mother of two beautiful kids. I survived heart failure once and am currently working to survive it once again. I have had a choice to make, and I choose to live and continue life to the best of my ability. I am not defined by the bad things in life, rather, I am defined by my reactions to them. Welcome to my crazy life, in writing, as I live one day at a time and always remember to count my blessings.

Blue Lily Winner, Tina Steinberg Re-Draw, 100 years

August 30th, 2010

I never imagined in a million years that I would be sitting, typing away with a 16 year-old eating dinner while watching a movie in my officehis bedroom.  But that, my friends, is life at it’s best.  Pouring down upon us, the goods straight from heaven, God blesses us with surprises all the time; some good, some bad, but none-the-less, from Him.  That is how I view our new addition.  Standing at 6ft 2in, this Kyrgyz boy has a gentle soul and spirit.  Taking him to school the first time was just like dropping my youngest off at kindergarten.  I walked away feeling like the mom from The Blind Side, only I’m not “packing”, although I guess I would pretend if I had too.

When people hear about our household, I receive the “wow, you have a full plate!”  Yes I do, but this plate is filled with two delicious children, a third child that we are blessed to call our “temporary son”, and two people who are madly in love.

When we give ourselves freely to others, we are blessed ten-fold.  If I am lucky enough to live 100 years, this is one more thing I can add to my life’s experiences.  In my twenty-nine years, I have been charmed by a gentleman, felt tiny butterflies of an unborn child, kissed the face of an orphan then made her mine, and now, opened our home to a boy in need of a family.  Despite all the pain I have lived through in these short years, I can say openly and freely that I would do it all over again to sit where I am today.

I have begun to drink in the possibilities of fall’s arrival; football games, both on TV and in person, the high school band, announcers, and cheers of the crowd, an annual hay bale run with my sister-n-law, Halloween costumes and decorations, and last but certainly not least, apple cider and homemade pies.

As for the two people that are madly in love, well we had the best date night ever at Westgate.  (To my Mr: Let’s plan more of those coffee shop date’s in the midst of a cool nights air, where we chat and love on each other until it is time to return home to our children).

But seriously Westgate?  What were you thinking with these?

Get your mind out of the gutter!!!  Now for the part you all are waiting for!

***We had to re-draw for Tina Steinbergs pendant giveaway***

Winner is comment #34, so I began to count down and when I saw who it was, well honestly, I cried and gave thanks to God that I am able to gift this beautiful gal with a very special pendant.  As I type this, tiny drips flow down my cheeks because Lori Ennis won!  You would be crying to if you followed her blog; there has never been such a deserving being of this pendant.  Lori, e-mail babe and I will hook you up with Tina herself.  And you say you never win anything!  XOXO back at ya!

Lori Said:

I live in AZ and, as a true Pacific Northwest girl by heart, I’m not usually heard touting AZ’s finest features. But I will admit that the ability to picnic at the park in your flip flops in December, when the rest of the country is shivering and shoveling their driveways is not a bad thing. Also, I love how you can drive 2 hours north and be in a totally different world – cool air, trees, open spaces. So I guess it has it’s good points.

Colleen recently e-mailed me melting my heart with her sweet words:

I just wanted to let you know that I found your blog through Brea’s facebook posting, and it just has made such an impression on me. I knew some of your story just by being at PV over the past years on the weekends, and occasionally talking to Tariq, but did not know the extent of it. I just had to pass on that I think your blog is beautiful, and your spirit is more so. I’m so glad I followed the link Brea posted and got an opportunity to see them both.
All the best to you and your wonderful family
Colleen

(Brea might just be cursing you right now Colleen!)

Congratulations sweet cheeks and e-mail me (riesdialogues@gmail.com) so I may hook you up with Wendy.  They will be in AZ this fall but not sure if there are any openings…….not to worry!  AZ in her second home so she comes often!

Thank you all so much for participating in the launch of the new Rie’s Dialogues!  Your comments have provided me with such inspiration; new lunch ideas for the children, ETSY shops, and ways to enjoy wherever your feet are planted.  You have taught me to seek the best from every situation.

I would like to add every one of your ETSY shop reccomendations to my ETSY page so that we can have one amazing place to find anything and everything we want or need!

Hope you enjoyed the grand giveaway launch of Rie’s Dialogues!  I’d like to say a big thank you to all the gals out there who have wonderful products and so freely gifted you just for being a follower of me, Rie!  Women are special creatures and I hope in this blog, you feel celebrated.

Blue Lily Giveaway–Tina Steinberg Winner and Reflections

August 20th, 2010

Nearly two years ago I met the most beautiful woman, inside and out, who specializes in capturing life’s most sacred and intimate moments between family members.  She introduced herself and basically told us to go off and play!  Have fun, sit down and chat together, tell jokes, and act as if I’m not here, she said.  Easy enough.  We didn’t care about playing and sitting in dirt, or that Jalyn had a red mustache from drinking Gatorade right before the shoot, this was our life true to the very core.

There were no moments of sit, move your head this way–now that way–on the count of three  fake smile!  Just a regular family out in a pecan grove chilling and enjoying being together.

I see this picture of my Leila-Loo on the wall and I’m reminded of how far she has come.  Everything we went through to bring her home was totally worth it all; would do it over in less than one heartbeat.  I can literally say to her one day ”I would go around the world and back for you”, because I did.  She knew I was mom and daddy was daddy that day we went to pick her up from the orphanage.  She was sound asleep.  We got her dressed, celebrated with the staff, and we were outta there baby; she never looked back.  I remember her awe of seeing the world for the first time as I cradled her in my arms.  She took it all in, soaking up the sun, the noises, the bumpiness of the car ride, our love and numerous kisses………and then she crashed, hard.  She slept that first night from 4:30pm to 9:00am, that’s what a whole new world will do to you baby!  Soaking up life, that is what she does best, from that very first day to the present.

I walk through the hallway leading up to J’s room and I see these pictures, so proudly hung on the wall with love.  I look at Jalyn and I see a boy that went from being an only child for five year, to having a sister that flew in on an airplane and set up shop in the hearts of everyone he had ever loved.  I was so darn proud as he graciously sat back and let everyone ooohh and ahhhh over her.  He has come so far from the time this picture was taken as well.  Overnight he has blossomed into this mature human being yet still maintains his animal instincts boys are born with.  I look at him and see his daddy, and I am reminded that this boy was created out of a deep profound love that two people shared.  I felt him kick and squirm, heard his first cry, changed his first diaper; all of which are just little moments in time in which to savor.

As a woman, there is no better feeling than a hug from your mr. and laying your head softly on his shoulder.  The worries of the world disappear and there is only he and I.  The scent of his cologne, those broad shoulders, and strong arms remind me there is no safer place in the world to be.  We protect our marriage and each other along this journey with God.  These pictures of us remind me to take care of my marriage, perhaps even before the children, because unhappy adults equals unhappy children.  Date night tomorrow……Yippee!!!!

You Round Up My Love, Loo–Winner and Tina Steinberg!!!

August 17th, 2010

Leila-loo, our beautiful girl.

A boy is incredibly special in so many ways, therefore I thought our family was complete before we decided to adopt.

Nothing could have prepared me for the love of a girl.  A bright star in the dark of night, she lit our path towards a wholeness never before imagined.  The journey to bring her into our lives began as an intimidating, exciting, emotional, up-hill battle; a journey into the unknown.  Yet the known is an incredibly un-scary, delightfully rewarding experience.

Women around the world give birth to children with various special needs, it is a small chance, but a chance none-the-less.  Those parents love their children just the same as they would a “healthy” child.  A child, created out of love between two people, is a gift.  A child born with special needs is a gift, wrapped in many different layers of beautiful paper.  Colorful ribbons adorn them while a bright bow beautifully matches their personality.  Throughout the years, parents receive the distinct pleasure of opening one layer at a time.  These layers represent the charming attributes our children present as time marches forward; the bows represent life lessons the children gift to their parents.

Leila rounded up our love and now I’m about to round up your love!  Tina Steinberg will gift one of my lucky readers with a “Round Up My Love” pendant only as seen here (valued at $135):

Girls, Love and a Happy Home…..Winner Announced!

August 11th, 2010

Jalyn:  “Mom, can I tell you something and you promise not to make fun of me?”

Me:  “Of course you can tell me anything.”

Jalyn:  “I think I have a girlfriend, but I don’t really know her name.”

Me:  “J”, may I give you some motherly advice?”

Jalyn:  “Yes mom.”

Me:  “OK, first you must always introduce yourself and ask a girl what her name is.  Second, you make small talk.  Find out what she likes/dislikes, become her best friend.  Be kind and polite.”

Jalyn:  (now raising his voice in despair) ”I did that with Taylor and she left me for someone else!”

Me:  (Taylor is a moron)……(no–I didn’t say that, but seriously thought about it.)  “You are a great kid and you have so much to offer your friends, you are kind, honest, and caring.  Your job tomorrow is to find out what this new girls name is and what she likes to do.”

Jalyn:  “I hope she doesn’t like the ice cream parlor because I don’t even have my license yet!”

So second grade it is, and it’s all about the girls now.  How sad, exciting, scary, rewarding, and amazing it is.  I began thinking about our conversation and how hilarious yet serious it was.  I take great comfort knowing that J felt comfortable in discussing his worries with me.

Our home is a shelter for the storms of life: heartache, dissapointment, teasing, bad grades, mean friends, stress, etc.  I know that above all, our children enter our home at the end of the day and feel safe and comforted.  They feel comfortable discussing the days affairs, the good and the bad.

Our home is fun.  After two hours of picking up around the house, everything neat and in it’s place, I began cooking dinner.  J and Leila built a fort in the middle of the kitchen complete with blankets, chairs, and a “no parent’s allowed” rule.  As I measured and added ingredients, I pondered how to handle the situation.  Do I ask them to clean up?  Do I demand the blankets to be put away?  Nah, I served their dinners in the fort and let them eat on the floor.  The laughter and conversations between a bro and his sis we overheard told me I had made the right decision.

Regardless of the day-to-day struggles each member of our family faces, we can all come home to a supportive and loving environment.

“A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer.”  Ecclesiastes 4:12  The four of us stand together, united.  That is what family is all about.

NOW, to the winner of those precious Crystal B. earrings!………….Congratulations SUZANNE who said:

I really like the Crystal B Mrs. C earrings, they are sold out right now but “fingers crossed” she will make more.
